Hand-Painted The Year Of The Rat Teacup (Brown)
Hand-Painted The Year Of The Rat Teacup (Brown)
Handmade and painted by an artist in Jingdezhen, China, this glaze of this teacup features natural smoky and wheat-like hues. The glossy finish is a result of direct exposure to fire and ash over a long period. The two characters on the teacup, “耳鼠“, can be translated as “ear rat”. The Chinese classic text 山海经 (the Classic of Mountain and Seas) describes this mythical beast as having the ears of a rabbit and the body of a rat.
Traditional wood-fired kilns have become rare in China today. The laborious process of wood-firing creates a unique, natural glazing, that can’t be achieved in more common and easier to use electric kilns. The special texture, color, and pattern of wood-fired teaware is a result of direct exposure to fire and ash over a long period, making wood-fired teaware some of the most sought-after teaware today.
